How to renew your green card (Form I-90)

When to renew, how to file online, what it costs and how to travel or work while it’s pending.

Filling out a form

Most green cards are valid for 10 years. Your permanent resident status doesn’t expire with the card, but you need a valid card to prove your status for work, travel and many other purposes.

When to file:

File Form I-90 within six months before your card expires, or right away if it has already expired, was lost or damaged, or has wrong information.

Step by step:

  1. Create a USCIS online account and file Form I-90
  2. Pay the filing fee shown on the USCIS fee page
  3. Attend a biometrics appointment if scheduled
  4. Keep your receipt notice as proof of extended status
  5. Receive your new card by mail

Conditional residents: If you have a 2-year conditional card, you usually file Form I-751 or I-829 to remove conditions, not Form I-90.

Travel while pending

Carry your expired card together with the receipt notice that extends it. Check USCIS guidance before long trips.
