USCIS processing times: how to check and what to do if delayed

How to read the processing times page, when a case is “outside normal processing time” and your options.

Notes on a desk

Processing times at USCIS change often and differ widely between forms and service centers. Checking them helps you plan and know when to follow up.

How to check:

  1. Go to the USCIS processing times page
  2. Choose your form and category
  3. Select the field office or service center on your receipt notice
  4. Compare the time shown with your receipt date

If your case is delayed:

  • Submit a “case outside normal processing time” inquiry online
  • Contact your congressional representative’s office, which can request an update
  • Ask about expedite criteria if you face urgent circumstances
  • Consult an immigration attorney about other options

Plan ahead: File renewals as early as allowed. Some work permits and green card receipts extend validity while cases are pending.
