How to apply for US citizenship (Form N-400)

Eligibility, the application, the interview and civics test, and the oath ceremony.

Naturalization is the process for green card holders to become US citizens. It takes several months and several steps.

Basic eligibility:

  • At least 18 years old
  • Permanent resident for 5 years, or 3 years if married to and living with a US citizen
  • Continuous residence and enough physical presence in the US
  • Good moral character
  • Basic English and knowledge of US history and government

Step by step:

  1. Check eligibility with the USCIS tool
  2. File Form N-400 online or by mail and pay the fee
  3. Attend biometrics
  4. Prepare for and attend the interview, including English and civics tests
  5. Receive a decision
  6. Take the Oath of Allegiance at a ceremony

Study for the civics test:

USCIS publishes the official civics questions and study materials. Check which test version applies to your filing date.

After the oath: You can apply for a US passport and register to vote.
