Filling out a form

Midterm elections happen halfway through a president’s four-year term. The next one is on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.

What’s on the ballot:

  • All 435 seats in the House of Representatives (two-year terms)
  • About one-third of the 100 Senate seats (six-year terms)
  • Governors and state legislatures in many states
  • Local offices like mayors and school boards
  • Ballot measures on state and local questions

How voting works:

Many states offer early voting and voting by mail, with different rules and deadlines. Polls on Election Day usually open in the morning and close in the evening.

For non-citizens: Only US citizens can vote in federal and state elections. Green card and visa holders should not register or vote.

What you might notice:

Campaign ads, yard signs and door-knocking pick up in October. Election night results can take days to finalize.
