Going home for winter break is a highlight for many students. In 2026, extra planning is worth it because visa rules and entry restrictions have changed.

Checklist:

  1. Passport valid at least six months past your return
  2. Valid F-1 or J-1 visa, or a plan and appointment to renew it abroad
  3. I-20 or DS-2019 with a recent travel signature
  4. Proof of enrollment for the spring term
  5. Financial documents
  6. Contact details for your DSO

If you need a new visa:

Visa appointment wait times vary widely and administrative processing can add weeks. Missing the start of spring term can affect your status. Check wait times before booking flights.

Restricted countries:

If you’re a national of a country covered by the 2026 entry restrictions, a new F or J visa may not be issued. Talk to your DSO and consider whether to travel.

Frequently asked questions

Can I travel over winter break on an F-1 visa?

Usually yes, with a valid visa, passport and travel signature.

What if my visa expires during break?

You’ll need to renew it abroad before returning.

Should students from travel-ban countries travel?

Get advice from your DSO first; renewing a visa may not be possible.
