Going home for winter or summer break is common. A bit of planning avoids problems at the airport on the way back.

Documents to carry

  • Passport valid for at least six months (some countries are exempt)
  • Valid F-1 visa
  • I-20 with a recent DSO travel signature
  • Proof of enrollment for the next term
  • Financial documents

If your visa has expired

You can stay in the US on an expired visa as long as you keep your status. To re-enter after travel, you’ll need a new visa, which usually means an appointment at a US consulate abroad. Wait times vary, so check before you book flights.

Travel on OPT

You generally need your EAD card and a job or offer letter to re-enter. Talk to your DSO before booking.

Domestic flights: Carry your passport and I-20 when flying within the US too.

Frequently asked questions

How long is an I-20 travel signature valid?

Typically 12 months for continuing students, but check with your school.

Can I travel while on OPT?

Yes, but you generally need an EAD and a job or offer. Ask your DSO first.
