American weddings vary a lot by culture, religion and region, but many share the same basic structure.

Before the wedding

  • RSVP by the requested date, usually online or by card
  • Bring a guest only if the invitation says “and guest” or names them
  • Check the couple’s wedding website for dress code, schedule and registry

What to wear

Follow the dress code on the invitation. Avoid white, which is traditionally reserved for the bride.

The day

  1. Ceremony: arrive early and silence your phone
  2. Cocktail hour: drinks and snacks while photos are taken
  3. Reception: dinner, toasts, first dance, dancing and cake

Gifts

Buy from the registry or give money in a card. Gifts are usually sent ahead or placed on a gift table.
