In the US, many benefits that are guaranteed by law elsewhere depend on your employer. That makes comparing job offers more complicated, and more important.

What’s commonly offered

  • Health, dental and vision insurance
  • 401(k) retirement plan, often with a match
  • Paid time off and holidays
  • Sick leave (required in some states and cities)
  • Parental leave (varies widely)
  • Life and disability insurance
  • Commuter and education benefits

The 401(k) match

If your employer matches, say, 50% of what you put in up to 6% of your salary, contributing at least 6% gets you the full match. It’s part of your pay; skipping it leaves money behind.
