This is often the first interview question in the US. The interviewer wants a short professional summary, not your life story.

The structure

  1. Present: your current role and what you’re good at
  2. Past: one or two experiences that led here
  3. Future: why this role is the next step

Example: “I’m a data analyst at a retail company in Mumbai, where I build forecasting models for 300 stores. Before that I studied statistics and worked in consulting, which taught me to explain data to non-technical teams. I’m moving to Chicago and excited about this role because it combines forecasting with product decisions.”

Tips

  • Keep it around one minute
  • Match it to the job description
  • Mention your move or visa only if relevant, and briefly
  • Sound natural; practice the points, not a script
