REAL ID explained: do you need one to fly?

To board domestic flights, adults need a REAL ID–compliant license or another acceptable ID, such as a passport. Enforcement began May 7, 2025.

Acceptable IDs at TSA

  • REAL ID–compliant driver’s license or state ID (usually marked with a star)
  • Valid passport (US or foreign)
  • US permanent resident card
  • Other IDs on the TSA list

Getting a REAL ID as a visa holder

Bring proof of identity and lawful status (passport, visa, I-94, I-20 or EAD), proof of your Social Security number or ineligibility, and two proofs of address to your state DMV. Your card may be valid only as long as your status.
