Traffic laws are set by each state, so read your state’s driver handbook before your test. A handful of rules are nearly universal, and they’re the ones foreign drivers most often get wrong.

Rules that catch people out

  • Four-way stops: the first car to stop completely goes first; if two arrive together, the car on the right goes first
  • Right on red: usually allowed after a full stop, unless a sign says otherwise
  • School buses: stop when red lights flash and the stop arm is out, in both directions on most roads
  • Speed limits are in miles per hour
  • Headlights on in rain in many states
  • Hands-free phone use only in many states

If police pull you over

  1. Pull over safely to the right and turn off the engine
  2. Turn on the interior light at night
  3. Keep your hands on the wheel
  4. Wait for instructions before reaching for documents
  5. Stay calm and polite

Always carry: Your license, the vehicle registration and proof of insurance.
