San Diego has some of the most comfortable weather in the US, a big university and biotech presence, and a large military community. Housing costs are high, especially near the beach.

Neighborhoods

  • North Park: walkable, cafés and bars
  • Pacific Beach: young, beachy and lively
  • La Jolla: near UC San Diego and research institutes, expensive
  • Mira Mesa: more affordable, large Asian community, near tech offices
  • Chula Vista: south of downtown, family-friendly, closer to Mexico

Getting around

The San Diego Trolley connects downtown, the border, and UC San Diego. Buses fill gaps. Many people drive, and parking near the beach is limited.

Costs

Rent is among the highest in the country. Sharing an apartment or living a little inland makes a big difference.

Border life

Some residents cross into Tijuana for food or family. If you plan to cross, check that your visa and documents allow you to re-enter the US.
