Utilities are the services that keep your home running. Some leases include them in rent; many don’t.

Common utilities

  • Electricity
  • Natural gas (for heating, stove or hot water)
  • Water and sewer
  • Trash and recycling
  • Internet

Setting them up

Ask your landlord which companies serve the building. Create accounts online with your address and move-in date. Internet often needs an installation appointment, so book early.

Deposits

Without US credit, some utilities ask for a deposit. Ask whether a letter of good payment history from a previous provider, even abroad, can replace it.

Keeping bills low

  • Use a programmable thermostat
  • Seal drafts in winter and use fans in summer
  • Switch to LED bulbs
  • Run full laundry loads in cold water
  • Compare internet plans each year

How do I set up electricity in a new apartment?

Contact the local provider or, in some states, choose a retail provider, and give your move-in date.
