Top 10 Things to Know About Daily Life in America

If you are moving to the US from abroad, brace yourself. American culture is loud, friendly, and honestly? A little bit confusing at first.

The Culture Shocks

We do things a bit differently here. For starters, small talk is virtually mandatory. Don’t be surprised if the cashier at the grocery store asks you about your weekend plans—they actually expect an answer!

A Few Essential Rules:

  • Tipping is not optional. 15% is the bare minimum, but 20% is the standard for good service at sit-down restaurants. Servers rely on this to pay their rent.
  • Portion sizes are massive. When you order a “medium” drink, expect a bucket. Taking leftovers home in a “doggy bag” is totally normal and encouraged.
  • Everything is spread out. Outside of a few major cities, the US was built for cars. Public transport is often an afterthought.

It’s a massive, diverse country. Keep an open mind, tip your bartender, and you’ll do just fine.
