F-1 students can transfer between SEVP-certified schools while keeping their status, as long as they follow the process.

Step by step

  1. Apply and get admitted to the new school
  2. Tell your current DSO you’re transferring and give the new school’s details
  3. Agree on a release date in SEVIS
  4. The new school issues a transfer I-20
  5. Report to the new DSO and enroll
  6. The new school registers you in SEVIS within the required time

Timing and work

On-campus work at your old school usually ends on the release date. Plan the release carefully if you’re on OPT or have a job.

Traveling during a transfer

If you leave the US during the transfer, re-enter with the new school’s I-20. Ask both DSOs before booking.
