OPT unemployment days explained (90 and 150 day limits)

How unemployment days are counted on OPT and STEM OPT, what counts as employment and how to report jobs.

On OPT, time without qualifying work counts against a limit. Going over it can end your status, so it’s worth tracking carefully.

The limits:

What counts as employment:

  • Paid work related to your degree, at least 20 hours a week
  • Unpaid work or volunteering related to your field, if it meets rules
  • Self-employment related to your field
  • Work through an agency or contract

STEM OPT requires paid work with an E-Verify employer and a training plan (Form I-983).

Reporting:

Report your employer and address in the SEVP Portal or through your DSO within 10 days of a change.
