Curricular Practical Training (CPT) lets F-1 students work off campus when the work is part of their program: a required internship, a co-op or practicum. It’s how many students get their first US work experience while still in school.

Who’s eligible

  • Usually after one full academic year in status; some graduate programs allow it sooner
  • A job offer directly related to your field
  • The work must be part of your curriculum, often through a credit-bearing course
  • DSO authorization before you start

Part-time vs full-time

Part-time CPT is 20 hours a week or less. Full-time is more than 20. Part-time CPT doesn’t affect OPT. Using 12 months or more of full-time CPT makes you ineligible for OPT at that degree level.

How to apply

  1. Get a written job offer with dates, hours and duties
  2. Enroll in your department’s internship or co-op course if required
  3. Submit your school’s CPT request
  4. Receive a new I-20 with CPT dates and employer
  5. Start work only on or after the start date

Frequently asked questions

Does CPT affect OPT?

Only if you use 12 months or more of full-time CPT, which eliminates OPT eligibility at that level.

Who authorizes CPT?

Your school’s designated school official (DSO).
